A synopsis of the previous books in the beginning? Honestly, that consideration alone would make me try out the series. Why isn’t it more of a thing?!

These all sound great! I’ve read a couple of the books on your list (I’m currently finishing up the Athena Club series—though for MaddAdam I am stopping after having read just the first one) but want to read some of the others. I agree, though… if the author can’t / doesn’t want to sum up the series to date early on in the text of the current book, I love it when they include at least the relevant background as a foreword! It should be more of a thing.

I have almost no memory of the first book in the MaddAdam series (I’m pretty sure I read it though…), so I’m going to reread that, and then if I like it, I’ll keep going.

I remember reading Oryx and Crake because the guy I was dating at the time wanted to have a mini-book-club about it, and then I didn’t like it, which disappointed him, and we never had our mini-book-club discussion. So that series comes with baggage for me. 😉
