Beta Reading

I’m not an editor or proofreader. I don’t pretend to be. But I am very much a reader, as well as a writer.  I’m excited to contribute to the literary community in this way.

Why Use A Beta Reader?

Friends and family are great. It’s wonderful to get initial feedback from those who love you and will give you the confidence to move forward. But they’re biased. Their feedback is influenced by their feelings for you. A beta reader is an objective reader who is familiar with your genre and can give you objective feedback on your manuscript from a reader’s point of view.

Why Hire A Beta Reader?

You can find free beta readers online. And these are valuable. They are people who love to read, and can tell you what they like and don’t like about your manuscript. They might say “this character was really funny” or “the central romance didn’t work for me.” This is good information for a writer to have. But, it leaves out the important “why” factor.  What in your plot is working? What isn’t?  This is where a professional beta reader can be helpful.

I am an author currently in the process of publishing my second novel (though I’ve several unpublished as well!). In my formal education, I have been taught how to understand and write about literary texts from a critical perspective.

What Do You Get From Me?

  • I will go through your manuscript and make in-text comments, questions, and suggestions in the document.
  • I will provide a 1-2 page overview of the strengths and weaknesses of your work.
  • You will receive feedback on the following: world-building, setting, dialogue, characterization, pacing, clarity, and overall impression.

What does it cost?

Rates are flexible. However, a general rule of thumb is $.001 per word. Therefore a 60,000-word manuscript would be $60. If that is a concern or a problem, please contact me and we may be able to work something out.

What Genres Will I Read?

While I’m an open-minded reader, who is willing to tackle all sorts of genres, my familiarity, and interest tends to be in the following:

  • Literary Fiction
  • Mystery/Thrillers
  • Sci-Fi/Fantasy
  • Romance
  • Magical Realism
  • Young Adult

I am not interested in the following :

  • Erotica
  • Graphic/Gory Horror
  • Westerns/War
